The Presence Pit is a VR experience I am proposing to design that will place users in a series of pit simulators where the environment they interact with becomes more and more sophisticated. I will also provide a narration as part of the soundtrack, explaining the changes I am making to the environment, where I state that my ultimate goal of creating an immersive experience that provides the user with a state of ‘presence.’
As the medium of Virtual Reality is developed it’s ability to provide a greater and greater immersive experience for users is emphasized.
One traditional test of a VR system’s ability to provide an immersive experience over the past few decades has been the “Pit Simulator.” This has users walking along a plank of wood located high above an abyss. An effective system could result in the user’s alarm and discomfort with being placed in a normally dangerous situation.
A little about me…
Background: While I’ve done some abstract work, I tend to favor making things that are more figurative and representational. Mostly experienced in film and video, fiction and documentary. Has worked in corporate video and news. Studied Theater and Film as an Undergrad. Really enjoy teaching in the summers. Here’s a YouTube channel dedicated to my student’s work.
Interests: I tend to enjoy experimenting with new things so I’ve dabbled in different creative mediums. Virtual Reality (with Augmented Reality) is obviously the hip new medium and it has piqued my interest. I find it has the potential to offer a pretty potent experience and it also has a natural alignment with some of the philosophical questions about authenticity and individualism that I often explore in my creative work.
